LET FOODS BE OUR MEDICINE-HIPPOCRATES

"In February 2006 I began seeing a psychiatrist for severe depression and anxiety. I was prescribed medications which helped treat the physical symptoms right away. About six months ago I had reached a plateau in my progress towards improving my symptoms, and the only solution my doctor had was to add more prescription drugs, none of which I was willing to take.

I contacted Mary to ask her opinion on alternatives to more medications. Mary had me keep a food journal as well as send her blood work from my most recent physical exam. Mary identified some trends, mostly diet related, that were impeding my progress.

Through Mary’s guidance I have been able to decrease my medication by 33%, soon to be 50%, solely through changes in my diet. Even better, my depression is gone and I am feeling the best I have in ten years. It is amazing to me how the medical profession is so quick to prescribe medications when, as I learned, diet can be just as destructive as any “true” illness. Many thanks to Mary for helping me to get my life back."

The Power of Herbs

Herbs have the power to encourage the body to heal itself. They are a healthy, effective and economical alternative to drugs. This is not to say that herbs are entirely risk free. Some herbs have side effects or can interact with foods and drugs. As such, a qualified herbal practitioner should be consulted to educate you on herbal choices.

The Power of Nutrition

Food and proper nutrition have the power to improve or heal medical problems, as well as prevent some conditions or diseases from occurring in the first place. Choosing a variety of natural, great tasting foods and enjoying them, in moderation, can greatly benefit your quality of life. Again, a qualified nutritional practitioner is of great value as an advisor on the vast array of herbal and nutritional choices available.

The Powerful Combination-Herbs & Nutrition

Mary is one of the few herbal or nutritional practitioners that combine herbs and enhanced
nutrition in her practice. She uses both modalities to bring maximum benefit to her clients. She believes as Hippocrates did, that we should "let foods be our medicine". And while herbs are foods that can improve specific health concerns in that short term, it's the combination of herbs, diet and lifestyle that will optimize your health in the long term.

Mary takes the time to understand who you are and the goals you want to attain to improve your life, and works with you to create an individualized plan of action.

Mary utilizes a holistic approach, teaching you how to maximize your health and enhance your overall well being.

Mary is an Honor Graduate of the Rocky Mountain Center for Botanical Studies, Certified Clinical Herbalist with a special emphasis on Nutrition.

Mary is a Graduate of the Nutritional Therapy Institute, Inc., a two-year masters level training program in Nutritional Therapy, Certified Nutrition Therapist.

Mary studied with Dr. Diana Schwarzbein, and is a Schwarzbein Level 1 Practitioner.

Working Together A one-on-one consult with Mary typically proceeds as follows:

The initial consultation includes a comprehensive evaluation of your overall health and the specific concerns you may have. Mary focuses on your individual needs and works with you to prioritize your goals. A short term plan is developed to start addressing concerns and homework may be given for the next meeting. Mary then
designs a detailed plan which may include a dietary change, nutritional or herbal supplements and other lifestyle recommendations, especially designed with your goals in mind. At the next meeting we review the action plan in detail and you decide which items you want to work on first. You continue to meet as appropriate to discuss progress or update
the action plan based upon your individual needs.
